REVISED SHOT CLOCK INSTRUCTIONS Apparel, Equipment, and Uniforms Cheat Sheet PRE-SEASON TRAINING CLASSES Mike Pavlot will be conducting training classes for all officials beginning on Sunday October 9, 2022. These classes are for everyone; brand new officials, or officials who have been around for 20 years. We can all learn, and it's a great idea to get your brains thinking of basketball rules before we step on the court! Classes will be held at the Glen Park Fire Hall at 9 AM, beginning October 9, and will go every Sunday at the same time, up until November 6. CONGRATULATIONS TO ONE OF OUR OWN! Anyone who has any experience officiating high school basketball knows where you start - at the bottom. You work hard, listen to the experience surrounding you, go to camps, understand and welcome constructive criticism. We have a bunch of those officials here with us on IAABO Board 59. One of those officials however, has taken his passion for the game, and more importantly, his passion for teaching the rules of the officiating craft, to the next level. Mike Pavlot has held almost every position of the Executive Committee on Board 59. He has remained the Interpreter of Board 59 for many years. His tireless effort in teaching us the rules, mechanics, and subtle nuances of the game have been invaluable. Mike is the calm prescence and even temperment that keeps Board 59 moving forward, and most of the time, ahead of the curve. We aren't the only Board to understand this. This spring, Mike was elected President of NYS Board 19. Board 19 is the governing body of basketball officials in NYS. What a great honor! Congratulations Mike!
THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS STUFF... Being a sports official, at any level, in any sport, comes with an element risk. Unfortunately, players, parents, coaches, and fans in general are getting more and more hostile towards sports officials. We see this on a regular basis. Because of this behavior, politicians have taken notice and are trying to do what they can to help support all officials. Sen. Jim Tedisco, R-Schenectady County, has sponsored a bill that "under the measure, those charges could be brought if the target of the aggression are sports officials involved in all levels of athletics, both amateur and professional." This spring, an IAABO Bd. 36 official was assaulted by a player during an AAU game. It is difficult enough to recruit, train, and keep new officials, but these incidents only make it more difficult. We all need to remain vigilante while working as officials in any sport, as you never know what danger may be lurking. THREE MAN MECHANICS REFRESHER With the playoffs and Sectionals fast approaching, three man mechanics will be in full effect. Doing two man for most of the season lends to getting rusty with three man. This article is a nice refresher with some good tips on what we should be looking for. ASK FOR HELP We talk about this subject on a regular basis. You have a game, and you and your partner are getting plenty of help from the crowd. And it never fails that there seems to be one fan that stands out among the rest. We have been instructed repeatedly - DO NOT INTERACT DIRECTLY WITH FANS! Seek the help from game management in these situations. THIS ARTICLE is a perfect example of what is possible when we engage fans personally. "THE MOST THANKLESS JOB IN SPORTS" Pretty good article from a coaches perspective. Click Here.
PROPER END-OF-GAME MANAGEMENT The end of a close game can be exciting, as well as confusing. This article is why it is so important to be on top of your game for a full 32 minutes. MESSAGE BOARD I have created a forum, accessible only to us, where we can have dialogue throughout the season. Talk about plays, talk about rules, or talk about politics. It doesn't matter what you talk about. There is a link on the left side of this page to the Ref Room. You must register with a username and password. I have to validate each and every member who registers on the site, therefore I am able to keep non-board members off the forum. I think this can be another valuable and useful tool. Please take advantage it. It's simple to use.
